Blog #22: Deciding on a Genre – Romance is in the Air

Hey everyone, Adrian here! Lately, my team—Tati, Sav, and I—have been deep in discussion about the genre for our upcoming 2-minute opening film. After bouncing around some ideas, we’ve been leaning toward exploring the romance genre. We’ve come up with two potential concepts for the film, and both have us excited and brainstorming non-stop.

Option 1: A Memory-Based Romance

For this concept, we want the film to start with Tati and me, happy in a relationship, walking on the beach (fully dressed, not in swimsuits). Out of nowhere, Tati brings up memories of how we first met, which would trigger flashback sequences.

The flashbacks would include scenes of us talking about each other to our friends—without even knowing the other person was doing the same. Then, it would jump to our first date, possibly at a mall, showing funny and embarrassing moments that made it seem like we’d never be a match.

We’d also add a “polar opposite” element to the flashbacks. I’d be rocking band T-shirts and a tomboyish look, while Tati would wear elegant, classy beachwear dresses. Over time, as the flashbacks progress, you’d see how our styles blended together when we finally got together. It’s a fun, lighthearted take on love and how opposites attract.

Option 2: Falling in Love in Real-Time

For this concept, we’d focus on showing Tati and me slowly falling in love over the course of the 2-minute opening. We wouldn’t start out together but would cut between scenes of me talking to my friends about her, practically drooling over how amazing she is while thinking it would never happen. At the same time, there would be scenes of Tati talking to her friends about me, feeling the same way.

We’d also include moments of us talking to each other, going on dates, and getting closer. The film would fast-forward to a final scene of us watching the sunset together at the beach, symbolizing the beautiful progression of our relationship.

Still Deciding…

Both ideas bring something unique to the table, and we’re still trying to figure out which one feels more natural and exciting to create. We’re playing around with the details and concepts, so stay tuned for our next blog, where we’ll share what we decide on and how we plan to bring it to life.

Let us know what you think—do you prefer the memory-based story or the real-time falling-in-love concept? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
