Blog #20: Why We Scrapped Horror and Moved to Romance

Hey everyone, Adrian here! If you’ve been following along, you know that our original plan for the 2-minute opening film was going to be a horror concept—something suspenseful with a masked figure, eerie lighting, and a shocking twist. But after some serious discussions, we decided to scrap the horror idea and move into the romance genre instead. Here’s why we made that decision.

Why Horror Didn’t Work Out

We were excited about the horror concept at first, but as we started planning, we ran into a few challenges:

  1. Too Much Setup for a 2-Minute Film – Horror relies heavily on building suspense, and in just two minutes, it was difficult to create an effective buildup while still delivering a strong payoff.
  2. Complex Lighting & Effects – The vision we had required red lighting changes, shadows, and intense cinematography to make it feel eerie. That level of detail would have taken more time and resources than we had available.
  3. The Story Felt Too Cliché – After reviewing the plot, we realized that the masked figure, and final twist were fun but not unique enough. We wanted something that felt fresh.

Why We Chose Romance

After reconsidering, we decided that a romance-based memory film would be a better fit for our time and storytelling style.

  1. More Emotionally Engaging – Instead of relying on suspense, we could focus on character-driven storytelling, which would connect better with the audience.
  2. More Natural to Film – Romance allows for simpler cinematography, relying more on dialogue, expressions, and natural settings instead of complex horror setups.
  3. More Personal & Relatable – A romance story based on memories and nostalgia gave us a chance to create something that feels real and heartfelt rather than just another horror cliché.

Moving Forward

Now that we’ve settled on the romance genre, we’re deep in the planning phase. We’re working on costumes, locations, and scene ideas, and we’ll be revealing more soon.

The horror idea was fun to think about, but at the end of the day, we feel way more confident and excited about the direction we’re taking with romance. Stay tuned for more updates!
