Blog #49: The Long Process of Licensing “Sk8er Boi”

Hey everyone, Adrian here! As much as we’d love to just throw “Sk8er Boi” by Avril Lavigne into Fading Into You without any issues, music licensing is a whole process one that I’ve been deep in for a while now.

The Endless Email Chain

I knew going into this that getting permission to use a copyrighted song wouldn’t be simple, but I didn’t expect to be caught in a never-ending “you actually have to email this department instead” loop.

Every time I reach out to someone, I get redirected somewhere else. One company tells me to email another, then that company tells me I need to contact a different licensing department, and it just keeps going. At this point, I’ve sent multiple emails and still haven’t landed on the exact person I need to get approval from.

Why Go Through This Process?

It would be easy to just use the song and hope for the best, but we want to make sure everything is done legally especially since we’re submitting our film for AICE Media Studies.

What Happens If We Don’t Get the License?

Right now, I’m still in the process of tracking down the right contact, but if we don’t get permission in time, we’ll have to swap the song out for something else. Either way, the scene itself will stay the same the song is just a small but cool touch we’d love to include.

What’s Next?

I’m going to keep pushing forward with the licensing process, I THINK I found the correct email for it, as I just sent 4 more to 4 different emails… but in the meantime, we’re focusing on wrapping up filming and editing. Hopefully, we get the green light to use the song soon! I’ll update you all when I hear back (from whoever they tell me to email next).
