Blog #4: Building Suspense in Our New Film Opening

Hey all, Adrian here, the director of “The Lost Bird” film. We are excited to announce some key elements that we have planned for our next film. For our next two-minute film opening, the title name still hasn’t been decided on yet, however production is looking clean and straightforward! We’re working on creating suspense through the setting, costumes, and overall look. Each choice from the rainy driveway to the strange mysterious beaver costume we decided on helps tell the story and keeps the audience on edge.

Setting the Scene

We start outside on a rainy day as the main character (played by me, Adrian) pulls into the driveway, wearing a suit and carrying an umbrella. This calm, quiet setting contrasts with what’s about to happen inside the house. Inside, small props, like a cup that seems filled with blood but is actually strawberry jam, create a sense of mystery and hint that something’s not quite right.

Suspenseful Costumes and Props

One of the most unique parts of this project is the costume for the hidden character—a beaver onesie with a rusted Jason mask and yellow gloves. This unusual outfit is both strange and unsettling, keeping the character’s identity a mystery and adding to the suspense. It’s a look that says, “something’s off,” and keeps the audience guessing.

Bringing It All Together

With a mix of setting, lighting, colors, and costumes, we’re creating an atmosphere full of tension and mystery. Each detail, from the rainy driveway to the eerie shadows inside, works together to build suspense and set up the big reveal. We’re excited to see how all these elements come together to keep viewers on the edge of their seats!

Inspired by the Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie

We were inspired by the suspenseful style of Five Nights at Freddy’s. The FNaF movie uses dark settings and creepy characters to keep the audience on edge, and we wanted a similar vibe. In our film, we start with a calm, rainy scene outside, but inside, things get strange and tense.
